The Sus switch · One button. Every plugin.
“Does that plugin even do anything?”
Good. That’s the test.
You’ve seen the threads. Does that gear even do anything, is “character” just snake oil. Fair questions: most “warmth” plugins fail them, doing so little you couldn’t pick them in a blind test. So we went the other way. Flip a Sus switch and a compressor gets louder where it should duck. A reverb swells before the note. A chord hangs and never resolves. Things that shouldn’t work, and absolutely do.
Nobody ever fell in love with a record because it was transparent. They fell for the feel: the pump, the breath, the bite, the thing that shouldn’t work but absolutely does. And nearly every one of those sounds started as someone misusing their gear: a compressor slammed until it pumped, every button jabbed in at once on a unit that was never meant to run that way, an overdriven preamp someone forgot to turn down. Happy accidents became the sound. SUS4 bottles that “what does this do?” instinct and puts it on one switch. On every plugin, on purpose, on your track, every time.
- On a compressorSometimes it stops being a compressor at all. The detector behaves differently, the timing rewrites itself with the signal, and it can start to feel like a gate, an expander, or something you don’t have a name for yet. All four ratio buttons in, mentally.
- On an EQStrange and wonderful things. Bands stop being independent. The curve you drew isn’t quite the curve you hear. Sometimes it’s wrong. Sometimes it’s the take.
- On the opto & vari-mu compressors (Aurum, Lume, Spark)The opto path stops being polite. The slow gets slower, the attack stops protecting the transient, and the whole thing leans in a direction the original hardware was never asked to.
- On Crimson preampDrive sits forward. Character that was a hint becomes the point. Clean preamp becomes flattering character box.
- On DrumAlignSus mode loosens the timing instead of tightening it. It leaves the human feel in, and only nudges the hits that are genuinely off. Pocket back, robot gone.
- On Channel StripThe signal-flow order changes. Compress before EQ becomes EQ inside drive becomes gate after compression. The strip stops being one thing and starts being a different strip every time you flip it.
